Tips for Watercolour Painting

Watercolour painting is a flexible and versatile material. Watercolour paint can be very different. Watercolour painting is a technique designed by dissolving color pigments in the water of the painting. For thousands of years, watercolours have been a fascinating material for artists. There are different techniques for working with watercolor paints and it is definitely a skill worth pursuing and learning. When you create a painting, the reflection of white paper light through the paints gives it a magical glow. In two parts, you will be introduced to the most important points related to watercolor painting.

1. Buy paints brushes of different sizes

It is very important to have brushes of different sizes. Depending on the size of the painting - large or small - the size of the brush will vary. If you are interested in painting smaller sizes, it is better to buy brushes of sizes 1000 to 6. In the beginning, try to find the right brush size experimentally. Also, always get different brushes with the size you need. Especially small sizes are very effective for the small details that you encounter in painting.

2. Choose quality watercolour paints

Investing in quality watercolour paint is one of the most important things you can do. High-quality paint is more durable and does not fade yellow or fade over time. If you are not sure which brand to choose, start with small watercolour pallets. You can get many colors you need by combining colors. Try different brands like Zart products, KOH I NOOR  or Micador and finally decide which one you prefer.

3. It all depends on the dry and wet fit

There are two basic points in watercolour painting: the dry parts of the painting and the wet parts. As the name implies, watercolour paint is a water-based substance. You can control the darkness and intensity of the color in the painting with the amount of water you add. There are many ways to paint with paint and by experimenting with these ways you will find out which one is the one that will get you to the result you want.

4. Work from dark to light with watercolour paint sets

Another very important technique that you should always keep in mind when working with watercolour paint is that you should work from light to dark when painting with watercolours. This means that if part of the painting is to remain white or light, it must be the same from the beginning to the end of the painting. In watercolour painting and art supplies, you create the intensity of the color yourself, and to do this, you have to work layer by layer to achieve your desired effect. It may take a long time, but you will be satisfied with the result.

5. You will need paper towels

One of the most important things you should always have in your toolbox when working with watercolour paints is a paper towel. Paper towels are a great cleanser for watercolours. You can use the towel to gradually add layers of detail.

Paper towels are very effective in correcting mistakes and directing the color in different directions.

6. The technique of spraying paint in watercolour painting

One way that can add a lot of dynamism to your painting is to use watercolour spray on the painting. This method helps you visualize situations such as water scattering or suspended dust particles. Hold your brush between your thumb and middle finger. Use your index finger to pull back the bristles of the brush and let them fly forward. The result of this method is somewhat random but generally interesting. We suggest you try this method.

7. How to use blooming?

A good way to penetrate watercolour paints is to use Blooming. Mix enough water with the paint and place it on paper. While your brush is still wet, add another color with the same amount of water. You can drag the colors in any direction you want. Let this part dry and you will notice that there are subtle streaks of color penetration.

8. Get the right texture

After some time of experience, you will realize that working on thicker and thicker paper has its own advantages in working with watercolour paints. One of the great advantages is that you do not have to work hard to get the right texture. In painting, one of the most important elements is the design of objects and materials with their own texture. You should use a light shade as dry and wet as the technique.

9. Colour pressing technique

When you have a dry area with high color intensity, you can only use water on it to create a light effect or edge. Use a pen with very little paint and water to put the watercolor paint on the paper. Then, before the paint dries, remove some of the paint from the highlighted area with a wet pen. The amount of color movement depends on the dryness of your pen in the first step.

10. Watercolour paint layer technique

Since watercolor paint is a material with a thin layer and, for example, like oil paint, it can not be worked layer by layer, to create the paint, you have to work very slowly and gradually on the painting.

Another advantage of this material is that you get a lot of color on paper. Choose a color and draw it on paper. Let it dry and then watercolour paint another color on it. You will notice that where the colors overlap, the pigments blend together and what remains on the paper will be a different color.
